Introduction by Paul Louis Metzger
Dr. Robert Potter is an esteemed medical doctor, medical ethicist, and pioneer in palliative care. And yet, he will be the first to claim that the patient—not the doctor—is the only expert in the room. Perhaps that is in part why Dr. Potter is an expert: he realizes his limitations as a care giver, and must defer to the patient as being better versed in the field of suffering. Please listen as Dr. Potter shares with students in my world religions course how they should affirm people’s human dignity and attend to the needs of the dying, no matter the religion. A compassionate, holistic form of medicine and religion is on display, as he shares and interacts with my class. Enjoy!
